By 1997, Illinois residents had tolerated some of the highest electricity rates in the country for long enough. The Illinois General Assembly passed the “Illinois Electric Service Customer Choice and The Rate Relief Law” in order to deregulate the industry, provide energy choice and lower customer rates.

Efforts began to separate utilities (which provide maintenance and delivery) from actual supply services (that generate energy). In 2002, larger commercial companies experienced energy choice for the first time, and more energy providers stepped onto the scene. In order to allow the energy free market to grow, the state of Illinois stepped in to significantly reduce rates and lock them in for ten years (known as the Mandatory Transition Period). Even then, small business and individual customers were slow to embrace provider choice, and passage of the state’s Retail Competition Act drafted a path for smaller entities to enjoy the benefits of industry deregulation.

Today, much of Illinois is deregulated, including major cities such as Chicago, Springfield, Naperville, Peoria and Rockford. Nearly ninety providers offer a variety of services, rate plans and payment plans to Illinois residents. Choosing a plan with one of the many Illinois energy suppliers is easy. Anyone can do it online by comparing available options and selecting that ultimate one that best fits intended time horizon, rate level, and renewable content.
